Mike Huckabee is a Liar

Mike Huckabee lying about lowering taxes while governor of Arkansas, from tonight's Republican debate...

"Huckabee seemed unruffled. "The Air Force has a saying that if you're not catching flak you're not over the target. I'm catching the flak. I must be over the target," he said. He added he had cut taxes as governor of Arkansas and was re-elected by his constituents, a sure sign, he added, that they were pleased with his performance."

Remember these statistics...

  • Immediately upon taking office, Governor Huckabee signed a sales tax hike in 1996 to fund the Games and Fishing Commission and the Department of Parks and Tourism (Cato Policy Analysis No. 315, 09/03/98).
  • He supported an internet sales tax in 2001 (Americans for Tax Reform 01/07/07).
  • He publicly opposed the repeal of a sales tax on groceries and medicine in 2002 (Arkansas News Bureau 08/30/02).
  • He signed bills raising taxes on gasoline (1999), cigarettes (2003) (Americans for Tax Reform 01/07/07), and a $5.25 per day bed-tax on private nursing home patients in 2001 (Arkansas New Bureau 03/01/01).
  • He proposed another sales take hike in 2002 to fund education improvements (Arkansas News Bureau 12/05/02).
  • He opposed a congressional measure to ban internet taxes in 2003 (Arkansas News Bureau 11/21/03).
  • In 2004, he allowed a 17% sales tax increase to become law (The Gurdon Times 03/02/04)
Don't let Mike Huckabee lie about his record and get away with it. He is a heavy taxer and will continue to tax the American middle class into poverty.

A Few Mike Huckabee Stats

Huckabee increased state spending 65.3% from 1996-2004, funded by 5 state tax increases...though he says he wants to cut taxes through is "Fairtax" national sales tax proposal.

Huckabee as been called the "biggest taxer and spender in Arkansas history"

Huckabee opposed a repeal of a sales tax on groceries and medicine in 2002, raised the gasoline tax in 1999, and signed a $5.25 bed tax on private nursing home patients in 2001.

The Cato Institute gave Huckabee an "F" for spending and tax policy in 2006.

During his tenure as governor the general obligation debt for the state of Arkansas increased by nearly $1 billion.

The 1999 gasoline tax increases were never on an Arkansas ballot yet Huckabee insisted "the fuel tax was a vote of the people—eighty percent of the people voted to improve roads."

Americans for Tax Reform called Huckabee a "serial tax increaser" in 2006.

Huckabee has complained that illegal Hispanic immigrants can not get financial aid for their education, saying denying them state benefits is "un-Christian."

Mike Huckabee and his National Sales Tax

Republican Presidential Candidate Mike Huckabee wants to replace the income tax with a national sales tax, he calls this a "fair tax"...but is that really so?
